Semaglutide is a medication that belongs to a class of drugs called glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RAs). It is used to treat type 2 diabetes, and is administered by subcutaneous injection once a week.

Semaglutide works by mimicking the action of a hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1), which is produced in the intestines. GLP-1 helps to stimulate insulin secretion and suppress glucagon secretion, which leads to lower blood sugar levels. Semaglutide also slows down the emptying of the stomach, which can help to reduce appetite and promote weight loss.

In addition to its use in diabetes, semaglutide has also been approved for the treatment of obesity, as a once-weekly injection under the brand name Wegovy. It has been shown to be effective in reducing body weight and improving other metabolic parameters such as blood pressure and lipid levels.
